Pitfalls: Trapping (2)

Now that we are warmed up, let's get ready for the 'real temptation'. From now on, you will encounter situations where you seem to win material with two moves, yet there is only one way that is actually effective. The key remains to look carefully at the other person's options!

We will stick to the special attack 'trapping' this lesson.

What should you do?

Win material by trapping. Pay close attention to the other person's defence.

Both 1.a5 and 1.c5 seem to trap the bishop. Yet only one of these moves wins material. In the case of 1.a5, black plays 1...Bd4. This square is defended by the bishop on b2, but since that bishop also has the task of defending the knight on a3, this piece is overloaded. 2.Bxd4 is followed by 2...Rxa3.

1.c5 does trap the bishop. The bishop has no more safe squares.
